Artist Bio
Julia Purdy is an abstract artist working in the SoWa Art + Design district in the South End of Boston, Massachusetts. Purdy’s paintings originate in intuition – she draws her inspiration from images and compositions that she experiences and feels in a meditative state well before engaging with the canvas. Like a composer might hear the melody of a song in her head before she has composed the music, Purdy envisions the color, composition, and other elements of a painting before she picks up a paintbrush. Sometimes, after speaking with someone, she will envision a painting based on that person’s impressions.
Purdy has studied at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the New Art Center in Newton, MA., and with artist Margaret Gerding. She has a MS in Arts Administration from Boston University and a BA in English from Michigan State University. Prior to painting, Purdy was a gallery teacher at the Harvard Art Museums and a volunteer at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
Purdy has exhibited at several group shows in the Boston area, including the Piano Craft Gallery in Boston, Mass., Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., the Kathryn Schultz Gallery in Cambridge, Mass., the Belmont Gallery of Art in Belmont, Mass., the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth, Mass., and the Attleboro Arts Museum in Attleboro, Mass., among others. She is a member of the Cambridge Art Association, the United South End Artists, and the Newton Art Association.
